THEY/THEM

Objective

To create a logo title lockup for one of the highlighted films below that will hit theaters in 2023 and 2024. This animation will be used for trailers in the theater, online, and on TV.

Audience

Research

Young people 18-25 specifically and are apart of the LGBTQ+ community.

When I started researching for the visual language for our modern queer love story I first looked back at classic and popular romance films like The Notebook, and Titanic. I then found movies that explored current-day queer love stories like Love, Simon, and Heartstopper.

Looking at modern queer media inspired me to look into the history of queer art. While looking at queer art I noticed that a majority of it had a strong handmade texture and look to it. After learning about this, I found incorporating this value style into the title design important.

CONCEPTS

In this approach, we see the excitement displayed as we count down to the next group therapy appointment The closer we get to the date, the more stickers and doodles up around the therapy date, creating a chaotic but lived in feel.

In this animation we will see the title animated on the rough, fun, drawn marker that matches the hand-drawn nature of the  Group We want to show how important space

Pronoun pins have become more common in the LGBTQ+ community and were our main inspiration for this second concept. In this approach, the text will already be on the pin, but will still be bubbling in excitement, as if it was dropped on the ground during the support group meeting.

LOGO ITERATION

When designing the type for the title I took inspiration from my queer history art research. I was mainly inspired by the handmade textural elements found in the art. This drew me to soft-san serif fonts with imperfections.

ANIMATION  DEVELOPMENT

Animation Pass 1

I mainly focused on the timing and passing of the animated elements and how this would line up with the timing of the 3D camera movement.

Animation Pass 2

Animation Revison

In this pass, we wanted to ensure that our 3D and 2D elements worked together as intended. Small changes were made to combine the 3D and 2D elements better.

To capture the motion of excitedly circling a date more accurately, I record live-action references of myself drawing circles.
